The Lagos State House of Assembly has directed an immediate halt to the demolition of structures in Makoko and adjoining waterfront communities in Yaba Local Government Area. The announcement was made by the Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, following a meeting with representatives of the affected communities.
The decision comes after protests by hundreds of displaced Makoko residents, who alleged that the demolition was carried out without adequate notice or compensation. The residents had expressed concerns over their safety and livelihoods, with many forced to sleep on boats or in open spaces.
The Lagos State Government had defended the demolition, citing safety concerns as structures were built beneath high-tension electricity cables. However, the Assembly has now ordered all ministries and agencies involved to suspend the exercise until further notice.
Residents whose properties have been demolished are set to receive compensation, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu allocating $2 million for Makoko’s development. A taskforce committee will be established, involving community leaders to ensure residents are carried along in the regeneration plans
The Assembly’s intervention has been welcomed by community leaders, who expressed gratitude for the government’s willingness to listen to their concerns
