Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party’s internal strife has deepened with the Abure-led faction rejecting Governor Alex Otti’s reconciliation efforts, labeling them premature and insincere. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused Otti of contributing to the crisis and questioned the timing of the reconciliation call.
The dispute centers on the party’s leadership, with the Abure camp insisting that the matter is before the courts. They argue that any reconciliation attempt before the legal proceedings conclude would be futile. This comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognized the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee, a move the Abure faction has criticized as hasty and prejudicial.
Otti had announced plans to set up a reconciliation committee, appealing to Abure and his supporters to return to the party. However, the Abure camp remains firm, confident that subsequent legal outcomes will clarify the party’s structure. The crisis has led to speculation about the party’s future, with some attributing the instability to actions by Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The Labour Party’s Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration has warned that the ruling party stands to benefit from the opposition’s instability ahead of the 2027 elections. As tensions escalate, further legal and political battles are expected.
