The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group, has announced the cancellation of its Monday sit-at-home order across the entire South-East region. This decision follows a directive from its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The sit-at-home order, which had been in place for several weeks, required residents of the South-East region to stay indoors on Mondays as a show of support for Kanu’s release. However, with the cancellation, businesses and activities are expected to resume as normal on Mondays.
The cancellation has been met with mixed reactions, with some expressing relief and others seeing it as a sign of weakness. As one observer noted, “The fear of Soludo is the beginning of wisdom”, referencing the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo, who has been vocal about his opposition to the sit-at-home order.
The South-East region has been under tension since Kanu’s arrest and detention, with IPOB calling for his release and advocating for Biafra’s independence. The cancellation of the sit-at-home order is seen as a significant development in the ongoing standoff between IPOB and the government.
