In a detailed research, it was discovered that  combination of institutional factors, campaign dynamics, and voter preferences lead to the Senate being populated by older, more experienced individuals. Further, facts show that leadership positions—such as Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and Committee Chairs—are typically occupied by more senior members in the Red chamber. These roles require experience in navigating complex legislative processes, leading negotiations, and managing diverse political factions, which is often something that takes years to develop.

We can say without hesitation that global best practice is for Senate representation of any legislativly serious country to be populated by older people. The gains hervestable from older and experienced people for Senate as enumerated above, say it all.

Senator Phillip Aduda fits into the category of Senators in question, he was a ranking member of the the Senate of the 9th  National Assembly for several years, representing the good people of the FCT. Not only that, he was the Minority Leader of the Senate. Here is the trajectory of Aduda’s legislative representation cum experience at NASS: He was first elected as house of Representatives member, representing AMAC / Bwari Area Council. His robust representation earned him reelection in 2007. Senator Aduda’s consistency in winning elections solidified his reputation as one of the key political figures in Nigeria.  In 2011, Aduda was elected to represent the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). His victory marked a new chapter in FCT politics, as he became the primary voice of Abuja in the upper legislative chamber. Aduda was re-elected in 2015, cementing his status as a trusted and reliable leader for the FCT. His performance in the Senate continued to enhance his credibility.  In the 2019 general elections, Aduda successfully ran for re-election and secured another term. His political clout and the trust of his constituents were probably key to his victory, as he continued to advocate for the development of the FCT and Nigeria as a whole.

As a senator, Aduda has been involved in several important Senate committees, which handle various aspects of governance, national security, and economic development. While the specific committees he’s served on may change over time, senators typically sit on committees such as Finance, Education, and Public Accounts.

Advocacy for FCT:

One of Aduda’s primary focuses as a senator was that he keeps advocating for the development and welfare of the Federal Capital Territory. These include pushing for improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and housing. The FCT, being the capital of Nigeria, often faces challenges related to urbanization and governance, and Aduda has been a vocal proponent for better management and service delivery.

Aduda has been involved in the sponsorship of bills, debates, and motions in the Senate. These often focus on national issues such as economic policies, governance reforms, and social welfare programs. His legislative work is often centered on improving the living standards of Nigerians, especially those in his constituency.

The main reason Senator Aduda should go back to Senate is his mastery in navigating the Challenges of Representing the FCT which he earned over the years of his representation.

Representing the FCT comes with unique challenges because Abuja is not a state but a federal territory. This means that certain political dynamics and administrative structures are different from those of the regular states in Nigeria. Advocating for the rights of FCT residents, who do not have full state rights (e.g., representation in the House of Representatives), is one of the key issues that Aduda has had to address during his tenure, and only Senator with EXPERIENCE can handle this delicate component of representation in FCT.

In the area of impactful contributions, Aduda’s advocacy for the full political and economic rights of the FCT residents has made him an important figure in Nigerian politics, not just FCT politics, especially on issues concerning federal governance. His tenure has also seen a focus on infrastructural projects and improving the quality of life for people living in Abuja.

In a nutshell, Senator Phillip Aduda’s legislative role at the National Assembly has been marked by his commitment to his constituents in the FCT, his advocacy for social development, and his participation in national legislative processes. His influence in the Senate made him a key figure in Nigerian politics, especially in matters concerning Abuja and federal governance.

The above reasons are why a new comer may not be suitable in starring the ship of FCT Senate. Doing so will mean automatic reversal of the monumental achievement recorded by Senator Phillip Aduda in the red chamber.

We are all seeing the problem associated with voting on sentiment in FCT; nobody knows whether FCT has a representative in the Senate for almost three years now.

The expected direct benefit of Senator Phillip Aduda returning to red chamber in 2027, is possibility of FCT producing one of the following positions at NASS: Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Senate Majority Leader, depending on zoning arrengment in the Senate.  We, in FCT cannot afford to lose any of these potential opportunities in 2027.
