ABUJA — The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has officially declared his intention to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift from his career as a career military officer to a partisan politician.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on February 1, 2026, the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) confirmed that while he has not yet formally registered, he is currently “in transition” to becoming a card-carrying member of the party.
‘Why Not?’: Loyalty to the Platform
When questioned about his political future, General Musa expressed gratitude to the APC for providing him the opportunity to serve at the highest levels of national security. “I’ve not transited yet. I’m in transition. Not yet [an APC member], but I think I’ll be. Definitely,” he stated. “The APC has given me the platform to present myself right from when I was CDS till date, so why not?”
The General, who retired from the military in October 2025 before his appointment to the cabinet, emphasized that his move is rooted in a desire to ensure the success of the current administration.
Full Support for Tinubu’s 2027 Bid
Beyond his personal membership, Musa pledged “total support” for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign. He vowed to give his “very best” to ensure the administration secures a second term, arguing that the President deserves continuity to fulfill his mandate to the Nigerian people.
The announcement has triggered intense debate across the country regarding the rapid move of top-tier military brass into the partisan arena. While supporters view it as a “loyalty masterclass” and a boost for the APC’s influence in the North, critics have raised concerns about the impact of such visible partisanship on the perceived neutrality of military leadership.
A New Political Heavyweight
By aligning with the ruling party, Musa positions himself as a significant political figure ahead of the 2027 general elections. His transition comes at a time when the APC is actively consolidating its ranks, following the recent defection of Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State and Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano.
