LAGOS — Celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has doubled down on her support for Peter Obi, asserting that her endorsement is rooted in his proven competence and not their shared Igbo heritage.
In a candid intervention as the 2027 political cycle heats up, Adichie stated that while she respects many of her kinsmen, ethnic identity is not a qualification for leadership. “I did not support Peter Obi because he is an Igbo man,” she clarified. “I admire many Igbo men, but I would never vote for them for president because I don’t think they would make good leaders.”
Her remarks come at a time of high-profile defections, including Cubana Chief Priest’s move to the APC, and provide an intellectual counter-narrative to those prioritizing ruling party alignment over character.
As Nigerians face a vanishing middle class and rising insecurity, Adichie’s focus on accountability serves as a sharp critique of the “Patriotic Assignment” narrative, framing the next election instead as a referendum on administrative integrity.
