The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered two new political parties, bringing the total number of registered parties in Nigeria to 21. The two new parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the development at the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja today. According to Amupitan, DLA was registered after meeting all the requirements, while NDC was registered in compliance with a court order from the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State
The registration process involved assessing 171 associations, with only 14 making it to the next stage. Eight associations successfully uploaded their documents, but only DLA and NDC qualified for final assessment and verification
Amupitan urged party leaders to prioritize constructive dialogue and unity, emphasizing that cohesive leadership is essential for Nigeria’s democracy. The certificates of registration will be handed over to the two new parties soon
