ABUJA – The Federal Government has concluded plans to arraign the former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on February 25, 2026, following allegations of illegal surveillance and cybercrime involving the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The charges, filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, center on claims that El-Rufai authorized or facilitated the interception of private communications belonging to the nation’s top security official. Sources within the Federal Ministry of Justice indicate that the prosecution will rely on provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act to argue that the unauthorized “bugging” of a public official’s device constitutes a significant breach of national security.
The legal battle stems from a recent public fallout between the two political figures, during which allegations surfaced regarding the monitoring of sensitive discussions. Legal experts suggest that the trial will be a landmark case in the application of Nigeria’s digital privacy laws against high-ranking political figures.
El-Rufai, who has recently maintained a vocal stance on national issues, is expected to plead not guilty to the charges. His legal team has previously characterized the move as a politically motivated attempt to silence dissent.
The presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, is expected to hear the formal plea on Wednesday. Security around the court premises is anticipated to be tightened, given the high-profile nature of both the defendant and the complainant.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly concluded its forensic investigation into the devices involved, with the findings expected to be tendered as evidence during the proceedings.
