The United States has delivered a new batch of military supplies to Nigerian security agencies, reinforcing bilateral defence cooperation as the country continues to battle terrorism and internal security challenges. The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced the delivery in a post on X, formerly Twitter, stating that the supplies were handed over to Nigerian partners in Abuja.
According to AFRICOM, the delivery “supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership”. While the specific nature and quantity of the equipment were not disclosed, the move signals sustained US security engagement with Nigeria amid rising concerns over terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crime.
This development comes on the heels of a US airstrike in Sokoto State in December, targeting Islamic State-linked militants. The Nigerian government has welcomed the support, with the presidency appealing for deeper military assistance in combating terrorism.
The US has been a key partner in Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram and other terrorist groups, providing training, logistics, and equipment. The latest delivery is expected to bolster Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions.
