DUTSE, JIGAWA — The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a newly wedded woman in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area, following the sudden and suspicious death of her husband shortly after consuming a meal she had prepared.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the quiet rural community, occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026. According to a formal statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Shiisu Lawan Adam, the deceased, identified as 25-year-old Alhassan Bukar, reportedly fell violently ill immediately after eating lunch served by his wife.
The police spokesperson detailed that Bukar was rushed to the Jahun General Hospital by distraught relatives after he began experiencing severe abdominal pains and vomiting. Despite medical efforts to stabilize him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police at the scene led to the recovery of a substance suspected to be rat poison, which investigators believe was mixed into the victim’s food. “The suspect was promptly taken into custody following reports from the deceased’s family,” DSP Adam stated. “During interrogation, she allegedly confessed to the act, though the motive behind the poisoning remains a subject of ongoing investigation.”
The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending a formal court appearance, had only been married to Bukar for a few months. Neighbors and relatives described the couple’s relationship as seemingly normal, making the sudden turn of events particularly devastating for the family.
The Jigawa State Police Command has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine if there were any accomplices or underlying domestic issues that led to the tragedy. The suspect is expected to be charged with culpable homicide once the investigation is concluded and an autopsy report is finalized to confirm the exact cause of death.
As of Sunday, January 25, 2026, the suspect remains in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse. The police have urged residents to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course, while also advising families to seek mediation for domestic grievances rather than resorting to violence.
