The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, affirming his conviction for failing to declare $40,000 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in 2012.

Aminu was arrested on December 11, 2012, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as he attempted to board a flight to Cairo, Egypt, with the undeclared cash. He had initially declared $10,000 to the Nigeria Customs Service but was found with an additional $40,000, which he failed to disclose

The Federal High Court in Kano had convicted Aminu on July 12, 2015, and ordered him to forfeit 25% of the undeclared amount ($10,000) to the Federal Government. The Court of Appeal in Kaduna upheld the conviction, prompting Aminu’s appeal to the Supreme Court .

In a unanimous judgment, the Supreme Court ruled that the appeal lacked merit, describing Aminu’s arguments as “devoid of substance”. The court affirmed the lower courts’ decisions, concluding that they had properly evaluated evidence and reached sound legal conclusions
