Abuja, Nigeria – Tensions within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have escalated over Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s growing influence in Rivers State. Senior party figures have issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, cautioning that Wike’s actions could fracture party unity and undermine the APC’s prospects in the 2027 elections.
The feud between Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has polarized the state, with Wike openly opposing Fubara’s re-election bid. APC leaders fear that Wike’s dominance could jeopardize the party’s interests, especially since he is not officially registered with the APC.
Wike’s troubles extend beyond the APC, as he has also been embroiled in a bitter dispute with his former party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP has accused Wike of betrayal and corruption, allegations he has denied.
The rift between Wike and Fubara, his former protégé, has been marked by violent clashes and court battles. Fubara has accused Wike of attempting to undermine his government, while Wike has vowed to block Fubara’s re-election.
Wike has faced allegations of corruption and abuse of power, including claims of embezzling billions of naira in Rivers State. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly launched an investigation into Wike’s financial dealings.
The situation remains tense, with both sides digging in. The outcome will have significant implications for Nigerian politics and the APC’s unity.
Wike’s supporters have rallied behind him, accusing the APC of attempting to marginalize him. However, APC leaders have made it clear that Fubara, not Wike, is the party’s preferred candidate in Rivers State.
The standoff has paralyzed governance in Rivers State, prompting President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency. The President’s intervention has added another layer of complexity to the situation, with Wike reaffirming his loyalty to Tinubu despite the growing tensions.
