Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have urged their colleagues to reconsider the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, citing concerns over the state’s stability.
Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo and Hon. Peter Abbey, lawmakers representing Omuma and Degema State Constituencies, respectively, made the appeal during a press conference, emphasizing the need for wisdom, restraint, and a humane approach to resolve the matter.
The lawmakers acknowledged the formal notice of impeachment issued against the governor and his deputy but stressed that dialogue and reconciliation would be a more constructive path forward. They cited intense pressure and concerns from elders, traditional rulers, and political leaders, who fear that impeachment could further polarize the state.
Nwankwo urged colleagues to heed the pleas and calls from stakeholders, saying, “We are appealing to the conscience of our colleagues to reconsider our steps and see how this matter can be resolved amicably.” The development suggests a potential shift in dynamics within the House, with some members seeking an alternative to the impeachment process.
