The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, received a request to probe Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, despite a court order restraining the move.
The Assembly’s spokesperson, Enemi George, stated that the Chief Judge has acknowledged receipt of the request, which was made in line with Section 188(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
However, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had earlier issued an interim injunction restraining the Chief Judge and the Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment process against Governor Fubara and his deputy. The court has adjourned the case to January 23, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
The impeachment process was initiated by the Assembly, citing allegations of gross misconduct, including budgetary impropriety and failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
