Appearing on Channels Television on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Professor Okaba asserted that the ongoing attempt to remove the Governor is not a legitimate legislative exercise but a scripted agenda dictated by external forces.
“We have video evidence that the so-called godfather attended that impeachment meeting, and nobody has come forward to deny it,” Okaba stated. He argued that the continued silence from the accused parties regarding the footage serves as a tacit admission of the meeting’s authenticity.
“The alleged presence of the godfather at that meeting raises serious questions about the independence of these lawmakers,” Okaba remarked. He added that the lack of a formal denial has fueled public speculation and strengthened the resolve of communities within the Ijaw nation to stand by the Governor.
According to Okaba, the crisis has moved beyond the halls of the House of Assembly and into the public space, where citizens are now questioning the motives of their representatives.
The allegation comes exactly one week after the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, served a formal impeachment notice on Governor Fubara, labeling his administration a “mistake.”
While the Assembly maintains that the Governor has committed acts of “gross misconduct”—including the alleged illegal conversion of state funds and failure to present the 2026 budget—the INC and other pro-Fubara groups insist the process is a retaliatory strike following the Governor’s recent defection to the APC and his refusal to remain under the “godfather’s” control.
Neither the FCT Minister nor the leadership of the Rivers Assembly has issued a formal statement responding to Professor Okaba’s claims of video evidence.
