ABUJAThe President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Professor Benjamin Okaba, has injected fresh controversy into the Rivers State political crisis, claiming to possess video evidence of a high-profile “godfather” presiding over the meeting where Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s impeachment was finalized.
Appearing on Channels Television on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Professor Okaba asserted that the ongoing attempt to remove the Governor is not a legitimate legislative exercise but a scripted agenda dictated by external forces.

The “Godfather” AllegationDuring the interview, the INC leader challenged the independence of the 26 lawmakers currently driving the impeachment process against Governor Fubara. He alleged that the “godfather”—widely understood to refer to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike—was physically present to coordinate the legislative offensive.

“We have video evidence that the so-called godfather attended that impeachment meeting, and nobody has come forward to deny it,” Okaba stated. He argued that the continued silence from the accused parties regarding the footage serves as a tacit admission of the meeting’s authenticity.

Erosion of Legislative IndependenceProfessor Okaba maintained that the involvement of an external figure in the Assembly’s proceedings has stripped the impeachment move of its constitutional credibility. He noted that the crisis can no longer be viewed as a simple disagreement over governance or the state budget, but rather as an orchestrated effort to subvert the will of the Rivers electorate.

“The alleged presence of the godfather at that meeting raises serious questions about the independence of these lawmakers,” Okaba remarked. He added that the lack of a formal denial has fueled public speculation and strengthened the resolve of communities within the Ijaw nation to stand by the Governor.

Shift in Political SentimentThe INC President noted that the revelation has significantly shifted the political conversation in the Niger Delta. He emphasized that the Ijaw National Congress, which has been a vocal supporter of Governor Fubara, views this external interference as a direct threat to regional stability.

According to Okaba, the crisis has moved beyond the halls of the House of Assembly and into the public space, where citizens are now questioning the motives of their representatives.

Context of the Standoff

The allegation comes exactly one week after the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, served a formal impeachment notice on Governor Fubara, labeling his administration a “mistake.”

While the Assembly maintains that the Governor has committed acts of “gross misconduct”—including the alleged illegal conversion of state funds and failure to present the 2026 budget—the INC and other pro-Fubara groups insist the process is a retaliatory strike following the Governor’s recent defection to the APC and his refusal to remain under the “godfather’s” control.

Neither the FCT Minister nor the leadership of the Rivers Assembly has issued a formal statement responding to Professor Okaba’s claims of video evidence.
