The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, failed to resume plenary as scheduled today, January 15, 2026, amidst ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The House had initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy on January 8, citing allegations of gross misconduct, including demolition of the state assembly complex and spending without legislative approval. However, four lawmakers have withdrawn their support for the impeachment, urging colleagues to seek a political solution.
The Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers has intervened, setting up a committee to mediate the crisis. The political tension in the state continues to unfold, with no official explanation or resumption date provided by the Assembly.
