Abuja, Nigeria – Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a prominent Nigerian lawmaker, is set to announce his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Action People’s Party (APP) on January 7, 2026. The announcement will be made at a musical concert in Akokwa, Imo State.
Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North and South constituency, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the PDP, citing internal crises, leadership failures, and neglect of his contributions. His decision comes amidst allegations of intimidation from Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, who has been accused of suppressing opposition voices.
The lawmaker has previously raised concerns about electoral irregularities and voter registration fraud in Imo State, prompting a backlash from the state government. Ugochinyere’s move to APP is seen as a significant boost for the party, which is gaining momentum in Imo State.
The PDP had expelled Ugochinyere in December 2024, citing gross indiscipline and anti-party activities. However, Ugochinyere’s supporters argue that the expulsion is a result of his criticism of the party’s leadership and his efforts to reform the party.
