Abdullahi Abubakar, the revered Muslim cleric who bravely sheltered over 300 Christians during the 2018 Plateau attacks, has passed away at the age of 92. The chief imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, earned national and international recognition for his courageous act.
In June 2018, armed attackers stormed communities in Barkin Ladi, killing scores of residents. Abubakar opened his mosque and home to hundreds of fleeing Christians, refusing to hand them over despite threats to his own life. His selfless action earned him the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award from the United States government
Governor Caleb Mutfwang described Abubakar’s death as “a monumental loss” and praised his unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and protection of the vulnerable. Abubakar’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope for interfaith harmony in a region often troubled by communal violence
