Owerri, Imo State – Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has reportedly begun assembling a campaign team for a potential senatorial run in 2027, with political insiders identifying Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere as the primary challenge to his ambition.
According to sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Uzodinma has been quietly reaching out to key stakeholders across Imo State to build a formidable structure ahead of the next election cycle. The governor, who has publicly pledged to hand over power to Owerri zone after his tenure, is said to be positioning himself to contest for the Imo West (Orlu) senatorial seat, leveraging his influence and grassroots network to gain an edge.
However, political analysts say Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a prominent opposition figure and former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) now with the Action People’s Party (APP), remains a significant obstacle. Ugochinyere, known for his vocal criticism of Uzodinma’s administration, has been mobilizing support across the state and is seen as a potential rallying point for opposition forces ahead of 2027.
“Ugochinyere’s influence in Imo politics cannot be underestimated. He has a strong grassroots following and has consistently challenged Uzodinma’s policies. If he decides to contest or back a strong candidate against Uzodinma, it could shape the dynamics of the race,” said a political analyst in Owerri.
Uzodinma’s alleged strategy includes consolidating APC structures in the South-East, neutralizing opposition voices, and presenting a united front to secure his senatorial ambition. Sources close to the governor say he is keen on ensuring that his political machinery remains intact beyond his tenure as governor.
When contacted, officials from the governor’s office declined to comment on the development, while Ugochinyere’s media team also did not respond to inquiries as of press time.
The political landscape in Imo State is expected to intensify as 2027 approaches, with analysts predicting a heated contest for the senatorial seat, especially if Uzodinma and Ugochinyere find themselves on opposing sides.
