Abuja, Nigeria – Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for clarity of direction, purposeful leadership, and effective service delivery.
Mutfwang, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), received his APC membership card from Rufus Bature, the party’s chairman in Plateau State, and pledged to work collaboratively with the ruling party to drive development in the state.
The governor’s decision has sparked controversy, with the PDP accusing the APC of attempting to poach opposition members. The APC has denied these allegations, stating that Mutfwang’s decision was a personal choice.
Mutfwang had previously denied rumors of defecting, citing attempts to lure him away from the PDP. However, in a statement, he cited the internal crisis within the PDP at the national level as a key factor in his decision.
The defection has been welcomed by the APC, which sees it as a boost to its governance efforts. However, the PDP has expressed disappointment, urging members to remain loyal.
Mutfwang thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support and pledged to back his re-election bid in 2027. He assured residents of an inclusive administration, urging them to remain united and peaceful.
The move marks a significant shift in Plateau State politics, potentially reshaping the landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
