A fresh attack by suspected armed herders in Benue State’s Kwande Local Government Area has left two farmers dead and several communities deserted. The attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Imande Avur, Abande, and Mbaikyor communities, forcing residents to flee their homes.
The victims, identified as Elder Abur Alam and his son Ikyaa, were peaceful farmers attacked while tending to their farms. A former councillor in Kwande LGA, Lawrence Akerigba, confirmed the incident, expressing concern over the recurring violence in the area.
“This is a brutal attack on our community. Two innocent farmers were killed, several people have been displaced, and fear has taken over the entire area,” Akerigba said. He alleged a lack of timely security response, noting that affected families have received no meaningful support despite the growing humanitarian crisis.
The situation has drawn international attention, with the US government attempting to intervene. However, the Tinubu administration has denied allegations of targeting Christians, attributing the violence to terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes.
Turan District has been under sustained attacks for two weeks, resulting in daily killings, destruction of livelihoods, and mass displacement. Residents are calling on the government to take immediate action to protect lives and restore peace to the troubled communities.
