OROKAM – A routine security stop-and-search operation turned into a deadly shootout on Thursday, January 29, 2026, as operatives of the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF) neutralised four suspected bandits in Orokam, Ogbadibo Local Government Area.
The confrontation erupted at approximately 5:00 PM when security personnel intercepted a black Golf 3 vehicle. According to a statement released on Friday by the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, the suspects chose “violence over surrender” when ordered to exit the vehicle for inspection.
High-Stakes Firefight
In a daring attempt to bypass the checkpoint, two of the five occupants reportedly produced AK-47 rifles and opened fire on the officers. The police responded with what was described as “superior tactical firepower,” engaging the gunmen in a fierce duel that left four of the suspects fatally wounded.
A fifth suspect managed to flee the scene into a nearby forest, reportedly carrying gunshot injuries.
Recovery and Manhunt
Items recovered from the scene include:
- Two AK-47 rifles.
- The operational Golf 3 vehicle used by the gang.
- Several rounds of live ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, has commended the bravery of the officers and ordered a massive manhunt for the fleeing suspect. Hospitals and traditional healers in the Ogbadibo axis have been warned to report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds.
This successful operation comes amidst a surge in banditry along the Benue-Enugu boundary, with the police hierarchy vowing to make the highways “too hot” for criminal elements to operate.
