The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing a severe internal crisis, triggered by a wave of high-profile defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, the APC’s internal tensions are threatening to undermine its electoral prospects.
Governors in Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Enugu have defected to the APC, sparking both celebration and concern among party faithful. However, these moves have also exposed deep fault lines and heightened uncertainty about the fate of some defectors and their political allies within their new party.
*The Fallout*
In Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno’s defection has sparked a brewing crisis between him and Senate President Godswill Akpabio over leadership positions and party nominations. Eno’s move has also raised concerns among some lawmakers who fear they might lose their political relevance if the ticket distribution favours only select power blocs.
In Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, have consolidated support within the APC, earning widespread backing as the party’s consensus governorship ticket. Yet, uncertainty lingers over several APC stalwarts, including former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, whose political ambitions are unclear in the reshaped landscape.
In Bayelsa, the defection of Governor Douye Diri has strengthened APC’s control of the state, but long-standing party members voice unease about integration and leadership roles within the party.
The political landscape in Rivers State was jolted following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s defection, which reignited tensions with influential figures like Minister Nyesom Wike. The fallout has exposed lingering rivalries that many believe could complicate APC’s cohesion in the state.
In Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection from the PDP has rattled what was long regarded as a PDP stronghold. Analysts caution that absent reconciliation and inclusive leadership, factional divisions may undermine the APC’s electoral prospects.
Unlike some states, the APC chapter in Enugu appears to be navigating the shift with relative calm after Governor Peter Mbah’s defection. With strategic alignments and the elevation of Dr. Ben Nwoye as caretaker party chairman, party insiders believe harmonization is achievable though internal zoning considerations remain key.
The APC’s ability to manage internal rivalries, balance competing interests, and distribute party tickets fairly will be critical to its cohesion and electoral success. The party must convert elite political agreements into grassroots unity — a task that has proven challenging in the wake of rapid political realignments.
