In a statement released on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the group characterized the move by the Rivers State House of Assembly as “constitutionally flawed” and a direct threat to the regional stability of Nigeria’s oil hub.
The Progressive Mandate Group alleged that the proceedings are being spearheaded by lawmakers loyal to Minister Wike. They described the effort as “political sabotage” rather than a legitimate exercise of legislative oversight, particularly following Fubara’s high-profile defection to the APC in December 2025.
- Constitutional Validity:Â The group claimed the impeachment process lacks proper legal grounding and ignores established procedural rules.
- Threat to Peace:Â Reopening political hostilities, they warned, would jeopardize the “fragile peace” achieved after months of executive-legislative deadlock.
- Budgetary Disputes: The group defended the Governor’s implementation of the state budget, noting it was passed under emergency conditions which the Assembly now lacks the power to retroactively challenge.
According to the statement, Governor Fubara’s recent switch to the APC has significantly boosted the party’s influence in the Niger Delta, leading several federal lawmakers from Rivers State to also join the ruling party. The group warned that allowing the impeachment to proceed would set a “dangerous precedent” that could destabilize other states across the federation.
The Progressive Mandate Group concluded its address by demanding an immediate suspension of all impeachment actions and a return to constitutional order, urging the National Assembly to uphold the President’s ongoing reconciliation efforts.
