ABUJA — Prominent human rights lawyer and political analyst, Chief Barr. Maxwell Opara, has sent a strong message to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), asserting that fielding Peter Obi as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate is the only sure path to victory.
Speaking on the shifting political landscape, Opara argued that the 2023 Labour Party candidate remains the most competent figure within the newly formed opposition coalition. He warned that any attempt to bypass Obi in favor of another candidate would result in widespread voter apathy across Nigeria.
A “Rescue Journey” in Progress
The lawyer’s comments come amid reports that Peter Obi has officially joined the ADC, positioning the party as the primary vehicle for the “Obidient” movement ahead of the 2027 polls. During a recent declaration in Enugu, Obi described the move as a “rescue journey” intended to unite opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Opara emphasized that Obi’s popularity transcends party lines, stating, “The people in the party know that if they give the ticket to Peter Obi, the job is 80% done. If they give it to any other person, Nigerians won’t turn up to vote.”
Internal Power Play
The ADC, which has emerged as a hub for a broad opposition coalition, is currently navigating internal interests from other heavyweights, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rotimi Amaechi. While the party has reaffirmed Obi’s eligibility, officials have clarified that there is no automatic ticket, and all aspirants must undergo a primary process slated for mid-2026.
Challenges to Opposition Unity
Despite the momentum, Opara’s endorsement highlights the growing pressure on the ADC to prioritize “electoral value” over traditional political zoning. He noted that the current economic hardship and insecurity have made Nigerians more desperate for competent leadership, which he believes Obi represents.
However, the road to 2027 remains complex. Reports suggest that the Labour Party (LP) still claims Obi as its member and intends to field him again, while some ADC insiders are reportedly pushing for a northern candidate to balance the ticket. Opara warned that such “political calculations” could backfire if they ignore the organic support Obi enjoys among the youth and middle class.
