Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, is reportedly poised to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following negotiations for a ministerial appointment.
Sources close to Kwankwaso indicate that the deal includes conditions such as showing loyalty to President Tinubu and respecting APC leadership. The move has sparked division within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, with some supporters backing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s potential APC move, while others remain loyal to Kwankwaso.
The development comes amid speculation about Governor Yusuf’s own political future, with some insiders suggesting he may also be considering a switch to APC. However, Hashimu Dungurawa, NNPP Kano State Chairman suspended by his ward, downplayed the development, stating that Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf are “working same direction”. He insisted he remains the legitimate party chairman.
Kwankwaso’s potential defection has sparked intense speculation about his next steps, with analysts predicting significant implications for the NNPP and Kano politics. The Kwankwasiyya Movement, a key bloc in Kano politics, is reportedly divided, with some members expected to follow Kwankwaso to APC while others may stay with NNPP.
The alleged deal has raised questions about the future of NNPP in Kano, a key stronghold for the party. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are watching closely for official statements from Kwankwaso and other key players.
