The Igbo Community in Abuja Federal Capital Territory FTC has threatened to frustrate the second term ambition of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu should his administration fails to fix the federal roads running from Abuja to Igbo land.
The body further lamented that the dilapidated nature of those roads has been adversely affecting socioeconomic activities in the South East urging the Minister for Works Engr Dave Umahi to expedite action on the matter during these festive seasons.
According to the President General of Igbo Community in Abuja Engr Ikenna- Ellis Ezenekwe and the Secretary General Comerade Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah in a statement, it has become instructive that the roads in the South East should be giving immediate and special attention in view of the commercial activities in the area.
“For decades, these roads have suffered neglect, becoming some of the most dilapidated in the nation”
“Abandoned by lawmakers and the Federal Government, they’ve turned into havens for criminals, posing grave safety risks to travelers and undermining economic activities in the region”
“Continued neglect fuels youth unrest, cripples trade, and further entrenches feelings of marginalization among the people of the South East”
“The association views this as unacceptable and urges the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on these roads”
“As citizens travel these routes this holiday season, their safety and dignity must be prioritized”
“We call on lawmakers and the Minister of Works to step up and restore these roads to a standard befitting a region integral to Nigeria’s unity and progress”
“The poor state of these roads not only hampers development but also perpetuates insecurity, as criminals exploit these neglected corridors for nefarious activities”
Continuing the body noted that the people of the South East are running out of patience as they may frustrate the reelection of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
“We warn that the patience of South East communities is wearing thin. Come 2027, if our lawmakers fail to act decisively on this issue, we will not hesitate to mobilize voters against their re-election”
“The ballot is a powerful tool, and we will use it to hold leaders accountable. It’s time for Igbo lawmakers to prove they’re working for their people, not just occupying seats”
“The Igbo Community Association FCT remains determined to protecting the rights and aspirations of the Igbo people resident in the FCT, in Nigeria, and in the diaspora. Our dream is the rebirth of the Igbo Renaissance – a future where Igbo people thrive, contribute, and lead with dignity in Nigeria and globally” the statement concluded.
