A tragic incident occurred during a community carnival in Umuchu, Anambra State, Nigeria, where a fireworks explosion claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured, including children.
The incident happened on December 29, 2025, when a powerful “knockout” firework detonated unexpectedly near the main stage, triggering panic and chaos among revellers.
One of the victims, Ugochi, died on the spot, while another victim succumbed to injuries in a hospital early Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with children among the worst affected, suffering severe burns and lacerations.
The community leadership has remained largely silent, prompting concerns that the incident may be downplayed.
Residents are calling for an investigation into the use of dangerous fireworks at public events.
Meanwhile, Anambra State Police commannd is yet to issue an official statement in respect to the development.
