As preparations heighten for the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, on Monday, November 3, witnessed the formal signing of a Peace Accord among all political party candidates contesting in the poll.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the historic event, which was organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC), was held at the International Conference Centre, Awka, and drew together political leaders, security agencies, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society groups, traditional rulers, and other key stakeholders.
It was gathered that, in his remarks at the ceremony, the Inspector General of Police emphasized the importance of peace, tolerance, and respect for democratic principles before, during, and after the election. He reiterated the unwavering readiness of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to provide adequate security throughout the election period.
The IGP, according to the statement, assured that the Police would remain professional, impartial, and committed to ensuring a credible and violence-free exercise. He also commended the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, for his proactive security engagements and continuous advocacy for peaceful political conduct across the state.
The governorship candidates, on their part, pledged to abide by the provisions of the peace accord, promising to caution their supporters and campaign teams against acts capable of disrupting the peace of the state or undermining the credibility of the election.
The Peace Accord signing, according to the PPRO, represents a major stride toward reinforcing mutual trust, strengthening democratic stability, and ensuring that Anambra sets an example of a peaceful, transparent, and credible election in Nigeria.
