The Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB) awarded Hamthel Holdings its Appreciation Award for “remarkable support, partnership, and commitment to excellence” during the investiture ceremony of the institute’s 23rd President, Bldr. Daniel Kolade, in Abuja.
High Chief Hamilton Ezeonu, a prominent NIOB supporter and founder of Hamthel Holdings, accepted the award and used the platform to call for urgent collaboration to address Nigeria’s alarming rate of building collapses. “The causes of poor construction practices, inadequate oversight, substandard materials, and ignored building codes – demand unity,” he said.
“Architects, engineers, and builders must work together to strengthen regulations, share knowledge, and educate the public on safety.”
Ezeonu stressed the need for unified advocacy for stricter building codes. “A collective voice from the industry can push policy makers to enforce standards, ensuring accountability and reducing negligence,” he noted.
He emphasized that fragmented efforts weaken impact, but together, professionals can drive systemic change.
Ezeonu further added that workshops on modern technology and risk management are critical. “Training programs on innovations like structural audits, digital monitoring, and disaster-resistant designs will equip builders to prevent failures. Continuous learning is non-negotiable,” he remarked.
He also highlighted research into safer materials and methods. “Exploring alternatives to substandard blocks, testing local materials, and adopting green technologies can revolutionize construction quality. This requires collaboration with universities and labs,” Ezeonu said.
Lastly, he urged public outreach to promote certified professionals. “Consumers must demand licensed builders. Awareness campaigns can curb ‘quackery’ and save lives,” he concluded.
In his acceptance speech, Bldr. Daniel Kolade announced his administration’s focus on mentorship for young builders, partnerships with training institutions, and innovation in construction. “The youth are the builders of today, not tomorrow,” he emphasized.
Boss Gida Mustapha, former SGF and event chairman, urged professionals to stop encroaching on each other’s roles: “An architect isn’t an engineer. Collaboration, not competition, is key.”
Attendees included Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Minister of Housing; Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, Chairman of Megamound Otunba Investment Limited, Otunba Olumide Osunsina SAN; Aliu Saiki, Maj Gen M. Adamu, and traditional leaders like HRM Oba Sakira Oyelere Oni Fiditi. The event was held at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja.
