Information reaching our report desk has it that some officials of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA), on Thursday, caused a fatal accident that resulted in the de@th of one person in Nnewi, in the process of discharging their function.

Although the details of the incident are still sketchy, it was gathered that the victim was menial labourer who specialize in concrete casting.

This was corroborated by a video currently trending on social media, where the Chairman of Concrete Casters Association in Nnewi, Mr. Linus Okoro, recounted the tragic incident and how it happened.

According to him, the ARTMA operatives were on their routine patrol and were chasing a bus driver with their vehicle over alleged violation of traffic rule by allegedly plying one way.

He said, however, in the process, the vehicle hit the concrete caster who was just coming out from his house to go for his daily hustle, and he died instantly.

This, Mr. Okoro said, caused an outrage among members of the concrete casters association at Ọgbọ Ọrụ, who also informed him of the incident, as he went for an outside work and was returning before he got the news.

His words: “The concrete casters, in their anger, marched to the Nnewi North Local Government Headquarters in protest, but the ARTMA people were nowhere to be found, because they have run away.

“Our members even wanted to vent their anger there at the Local Government Secretariat, but I intervened and calmed them down; and the Local Government Mayor, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, came and addressed us, and also directed the DPO to take over the matter and ensure that justice is served.”

“Although we were satisfied with his kind words and consolations, but were are still very much angry for the life of our members that was lost,” he added.

He further recalled that the Local Government Chairman had earlier directed the traffic officials to temporarily suspend their arrest of drivers who ply one-way where there’s an ongoing road construction that necessitates such, considering the ongoing constructions in different parts of the city.

As at the time of filing this report, no official statement has yet been released by relevant authorities regarding the said crash or its details.
