Police Intensify Operations to Rescue Abducted Doctor in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation following the reported abduction of a medical doctor in Uruagu, Nnewi, located in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Friday, the incident occurred on Thursday, October 30, 2025, when unidentified gunmen reportedly whisked the victim away under circumstances yet to be ascertained. The Command said it received the report and immediately commenced investigations to unravel the details surrounding the incident.

Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, was said to have ordered the immediate deployment of tactical teams and specialized operatives to track down the abductors, ensure the victim’s safe rescue, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The CP, according to the statement, has also directed intensified intelligence and operational surveillance around Nnewi and adjoining communities to forestall any further criminal activity in the area.

While assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the doctor’s release, the Police Command appealed to members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with law enforcement agencies. It urged anyone with credible information that could aid the investigation to report promptly to the nearest police station or contact the Command Control Room via 07039194332, or the Police Public Relations Officer directly through 08039334002.

The Police Spokesman further reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, stressing that the police under CP Orutugu’s leadership will not relent in its efforts to rid Anambra of criminal elements and restore lasting peace and security across the state.

Recall that a urologist in the Department of Surgery at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, Dr. Cornelius Onuigbo, was also abducted by gunmen on the evening of Tuesday, January 21 this year.

The incident occurred at the gate of Onuigbo’s residence in Nnewi as he returned home from work.

The medical doctor was, however, released few days after, following the intensified efforts and manhunt launched by the Police, resulting in his freedom that same week.
