The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, has affirmed that the party’s forthcoming National Convention will proceed as planned, despite recent political defections and external pressures.
Speaking on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja, Governor Mohammed dismissed concerns that internal rifts and recent high-profile defections would derail the convention, scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.
He described the PDP as “a resilient and people-focused party” that remains committed to its democratic ideals and internal processes.
“No amount of defections or external forces can stop the PDP from holding its National Convention. We remain united in our resolve to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections,” Governor Mohammed stated.
The convention is expected to bring together party leaders, elected officials, and delegates from across the country to discuss key policy directions and elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
The Bauchi governor also reassured party faithful that the PDP is undergoing reforms to strengthen internal democracy, promising that the convention will reflect transparency, inclusion, and accountability.
Insiders within the party indicate that preparations are already in full gear, with committees set up to oversee logistics, accreditation, security, and media coverage.
Amid growing speculation about further defections, particularly in the South-East and North-Central zones, Governor Mohammed called on members to remain steadfast, adding that the PDP remains the only viable alternative to the ruling party.
“We are reaching out to all aggrieved members. The doors of reconciliation remain open, but the movement and progress of the party cannot be held hostage by a few dissatisfied individuals,” he said.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, has been working to regain national prominence following losses in the past two general elections. The upcoming convention is seen as a critical step in rebuilding party structures and reaffirming its position as a formidable opposition force.
