The task of ensuring adequate safety on the roads has been described as everybody’s responsibility, requiring partnership, discipline, and shared commitment from all stakeholders.

The new and 16th substantive Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, Corps Commander (CC) Bridget Asekhauno, stated this on Monday when a delegation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, paid her a courtesy and familiarization visit at the Command Headquarters in Awka.

The new FRSC Boss, who warmly received the delegation led by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, said the timing of the visit was remarkable as it also coincided with the FRSC’s SERVICOM (Service Compact with All Nigerians) Week, which she described as a period dedicated to appreciating the agency’s stakeholders and “customers” for their cooperation and contributions to road safety.

According to her, the FRSC’s services go far beyond patrol duties, encompassing vital components such as driver’s licensing, traffic management, rescue operations, road crash response, and safety education, among others, all geared toward ensuring a safer motoring environment.

Joined by some other senior officers of the Command, CC Asekhauno expressed deep appreciation to the NUJ for its sustained partnership with the Corps in promoting road safety awareness and for always publicizing FRSC activities across various media platforms. She acknowledged that the level of media support so far received by the Command since her assumption of office has been overwhelming, describing it as invaluable and irreplaceable.

She further noted that the media’s role in enlightening the public on safety matters cannot be quantified, stressing that if the Corps were to pay for the publicity and coverage it gets from journalists, it would cost millions of naira.

“You’ve been giving us your airtime free of charge, running our jingles without billing us, and projecting our work selflessly,” she said. “We truly can’t pay for such generosity, and that’s why we must reciprocate your goodwill.”

The Sector Commander also appealed to journalists to assist the Corps in identifying and correcting lapses among FRSC personnel through constructive feedback and professional criticism, which, she said, would help strengthen service delivery.

“We’re open to training, suggestions, advice, and corrections where necessary,” she emphasized, urging thus: “If you see any of our staff doing something wrong, help us to improve; that’s also part of our partnership means.”

CC Asekhauno reaffirmed her commitment to deepening collaboration between the FRSC and the media, noting that both institutions share a common responsibility in shaping public behaviour and promoting societal order.

Her words: “Road safety is everybody’s business. I assure you that under my watch, our officers will give their best to ensure that the people of Anambra are safe on the road.”

Earlier speaking, the NUJ Chairman, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, commended the new Sector Commander for her openness and warmth towards journalists, expressing confidence that her tenure would record significant successes. He noted that the FRSC has always been one of the NUJ’s most consistent partners in the state and assured the Command of the Union’s continued cooperation and support in promoting safer road culture.

Dr. Odogwu further congratulated CC Asekhauno on her recent posting to Anambra, describing the state as both challenging and rewarding for security and public service heads. “Anambra is a place where you see the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he said. “But every challenge here refines leaders. That’s why many who serve here often move on to higher ranks.”

He also pledged that the NUJ would continue to provide media coverage for the Corps’ activities, while calling for enhanced collaboration in capacity building and joint training between the FRSC and journalists in the state. The NUJ helmsman additionally urged the FRSC to assist journalists in areas such as driver’s license processing and to ensure that officers always treat journalists as partners in progress, even when enforcing traffic laws.

Regarding the visit’s coincidence with the commencement of the FRSC SERVICOM Week, Dr. Odogwu described it as a symbolic start of mutual engagement between the media and the Corps.

“Take it that your SERVICOM Week has started with this visit from the press,” he said, adding that the media will ensure maximum publicity for the event and other road safety campaigns across the state.

“So, the partnership has already started and we pray that it goes farther and farther and become even much stronger. We also pray that your stay in Anambra State will be very very successful and seamless. So, once again, on behalf of the NUJ Anambra State, you are highly welcome sir,” he concluded.

This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno recently assumed office as the 16th substantive FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra following her redeployment from the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, to succeed CC Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, who was transferred to Delta State in September 2025.

Asekhauno, a native of Fugar in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State, is an accomplished officer with nearly three decades of meritorious service across several FRSC commands in Nigeria. She holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Jos, a Master’s degree in Transport Management from LAUTECH, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Teachers Institute (NTI). She is also an alumna of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), having completed the Strategic Course in Command Responsibility (SCCR), and is a recipient of numerous national and Corps-level awards, including the Road Safety Star Award (RSS) for outstanding performance.

Upon assumption of office few weeks ago, she assured residents of Anambra of her determination to improve road safety, reduce crashes, strengthen community engagement, and promote responsible driving culture across the state through proactive enforcement and sustained public enlightenment.
