A devastating incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon at Mabushi Bridge, Abuja, claiming the lives of a family of four and sparking violent retaliation from outraged residents.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy began when a private vehicle carrying a man, his wife, and their two children was intercepted by suspected roadside touts commonly referred to as “Agberos” near the Berger Roundabout in Wuse. The confrontation reportedly escalated when one of the touts forced his way into the moving vehicle and attempted to seize control of the steering wheel.
In the ensuing struggle, the driver lost control of the car, which veered off course and crashed into a bridge pillar at Mabushi. The impact was fatal, killing all four family members instantly.
The horrifying scene triggered immediate outrage among bystanders and local residents. In a swift and furious response, three of the suspected touts were chased down, lynched, and set ablaze by an angry mob before security operatives could intervene. Police officers from the Mabushi Division later arrived at the scene, rescuing two of the injured suspects and transporting them to the National Hospital for emergency care.
As of press time, the Nigerian Police Force has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. The identities of the deceased family members have not been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin.
The incident has reignited public concern over the activities of touts in the Federal Capital Territory, with many residents calling for urgent government action to curb street harassment and enforce stricter traffic regulations.
A community mourns, and a city demands justice.
