Police detain final-year student for allegedly abandoning newborn in bush

The Police Command in Nasarawa State has detained a final-year student and nursing mother for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby girl in a bush in Akwanga, Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.

SP Ramhan Nansel, the command’s spokesperson, who confirmed the arrest and detention to newsmen on Thursday in Lafia, added that the suspect would be prosecuted on conclusion of investigations.

“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution,” Nansel said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mother of the abandoned baby had been identified as a final year National Certificate in Education student of the College of Education Akwanga.

She allegedly abandoned the newborn wrapped in a cloth in the bush near Hope Academy Primary School on AA Koto Street, Akwanga

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the baby was found alive on Wednesday and reported to the police for appropriate action.

The discovery of the abandoned baby has sparked outrage among residents, with many expressing shock over the incident.
