Kaduna State has once again been plunged into mourning following a brutal attack by armed bandits on Wake village in Agunu Ward, Kachia Local Government Area. The early morning assault on Sunday left at least nine people dead, 18 injured, and an unspecified number abducted, according to local sources and security reports.
Residents described the attack as sudden and overwhelming, with the assailants arriving in large numbers and opening fire indiscriminately. Survivors recounted scenes of chaos as families fled into the bush, leaving behind homes and loved ones. The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, with critically wounded victims transferred to hospitals in Kaduna for advanced care.
Despite the gravity of the incident, the Kaduna State Government has yet to issue an official statement, drawing sharp criticism from community leaders and political figures. Governor Uba Sani, during a televised appearance on Sunday night, claimed that insecurity in troubled areas had been “largely addressed,” a remark that has sparked outrage given the fresh wave of violence.
In a strongly worded statement, Rt. Hon. Isa Mohammed Ashiru, a prominent opposition figure in the state, condemned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he described as “gimmicks, fake promises, and lack of genuine leadership.” He blamed the APC-led administration for the deteriorating security situation and pledged to prioritize safety and protection if given the mandate to serve.
“Kaduna cannot and will not continue like this,” Ashiru declared. “No government has any justification if its citizens live in fear. Together, we will reclaim our state, In Sha Allah.”
Military sources confirmed that troops from the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army have launched a rescue operation in collaboration with other security agencies to track down the attackers and recover those abducted.
As Kaduna reels from yet another tragedy, calls for accountability, transparency, and decisive action grow louder. The people of Wake village and indeed all of Southern Kaduna await not just condolences, but concrete steps to end the cycle of violence that has plagued their communities for far too long.
