Angry Man Beats Relative to Death over Land Dispute in Anambra, Arrested by Police

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Okwuchukwu Ezimuo, aged 45, over the alleged killing of his relative during a family land dispute in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

This was contained in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to him, the suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to the Nnobi Police Divisional Headquarters following the incident, which occurred on the evening of September 22, 2025, at Umunocha Village, Awka-Etiti.

The PPRO explained that preliminary information gathered by the police revealed that the victim, Joseph Dike, aged 65, collapsed after he was struck on the chest by the suspect during a quarrel over family land.

He further disclosed that the victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor on duty.

The statement added that operatives of the Command swiftly visited the scene of the incident, where relevant evidence, including photographs, was taken to aid investigation.

SP Ikenga also confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody, where he is undergoing interrogation.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, in his reactions, condemned such violent act, describing it as avoidable.

The CP, through the PPRO, urged residents to always seek peaceful means of resolving disputes and to avoid violence at all times, stressing that violence only breeds tragedy.

SP Ikenga also revealed that the CP has directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet investigation.

While assuring that the Command would unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served, the PPRO also assured that the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
