In what has been described as another major breakthrough against illegal arms trafficking, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Akpan Godwin, for unlawful possession of over 1,000 rounds of live ammunition in Nkpor, Onitsha.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was arrested on Friday, August 22, by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following credible intelligence.
He said during the operation, police recovered a total of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition found in the suspect’s possession. Preliminary interrogation revealed that Mr. Godwin was allegedly engaged in the illegal sale of ammunition, and he also mentioned other individuals connected to the illicit trade.
The police spokesman further disclosed that operatives have intensified investigations and launched a manhunt to track down all accomplices involved in the illegal arms network. He assured that the public would be duly updated on further developments as the investigation progresses.
Meanwhile, the Command reiterated its determination to sustain its crackdown on illegal arms proliferation and other criminal activities across the state. It also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to aid in flushing out criminal elements from Anambra.
