In a strategic move aimed at strengthening the opposition and amplifying the voice of women in Nigerian politics, Hajiya Maryam Inna Chiroma, former Minister of Women Affairs, led a high-powered delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Founding Mothers and Women to Bauchi State for a consultative visit with Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed .
The meeting, held at the Bauchi Government House, centered on the urgent need for unity within the PDP and the critical role of women in shaping the partyโs future, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing the gathering, Hajiya Maryam Inna Chiroma commended Governor Bala Mohammed and other PDP governors for their resilience and steadfastness in the face of mounting pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). She emphasized the importance of consolidating party structures and building formidable alliances to reposition the PDP as a viable alternative.
โAs Chairman of the PDP Governorsโ Forum, we urge you to lead efforts in reuniting the party,โ she said. โThe APC-led federal government has failed to uphold affirmative action for women, particularly in political appointments. The PDP must rise to correct this imbalance and restore hope to Nigerian women.โ
The delegation also used the opportunity to brainstorm on pressing issues affecting the party, including internal cohesion, strategic planning, and the marginalization of women in governance.
In his response, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed deep appreciation for the visit, describing the women as โmothers of the partyโ whose wisdom and commitment remain invaluable. He echoed their concerns and called for collective action to rescue Nigeria from what he termed the โmaladministrationโ of the APC-led federal government.
โAll hands must be on deck,โ the governor declared. โWe must work together men and women, young and old to rebuild our party and restore good governance in Nigeria.โ
The visit comes at a time of intense political recalibration within Nigeriaโs major parties, with the PDP seeking to reposition itself as a credible alternative ahead of the next electoral cycle. The involvement of founding mothers and women leaders signals a renewed push for inclusivity, strategy, and unity of purpose within the opposition ranks.
