In a strategic political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Northern Minorities Consultative Forum has publicly called on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) following the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South.
Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, the Forum’s spokesman, Mr. Jessy Mallums, emphasized the urgency of consolidating opposition forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “Peter Obi should not hesitate to return to PDP and join forces with Governor Bala Mohammed. Together, they represent a formidable alliance capable of unseating the APC in 2027,” Mallums stated.
The Forum’s appeal comes amid growing momentum for a cross-regional coalition, with the PDP’s zoning decision seen as a strategic move to attract southern political heavyweights. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, a prominent northern figure within the PDP, has been floated as a potential running mate in a proposed Obi-Bala ticket.
Adding weight to the Forum’s call, Hon Sabo Sani Labaran, National Coordinator of the Obi-Bala Campaign Organisation, has formally endorsed the push for Obi’s return to the PDP. Labaran described the alliance as “a national rescue mission,” urging stakeholders across party lines to prioritize competence and unity over partisan divisions.
Political analysts suggest that the endorsement by the Northern Minorities Forum could signal a broader realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape. The Forum, which includes members from multiple political parties, has consistently advocated for inclusive governance and credible leadership.
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, remains a popular figure among youth and reform-minded voters. His potential return to PDP is expected to reshape the dynamics of the 2027 race, especially with the party’s ticket now zoned to the South.
As consultations intensify, observers await Obi’s response, which could determine the trajectory of opposition politics in the months ahead.
