At the verge of Nigeria’s collapse, the Ohanaeze Youth Council has urged lawmakers of Igbo extraction to empower community youths in their constituencies with guns and other security gadgets for unavoidable self-defense.
In a press release issued on Thursday, 28th August 2025, through its national President, Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka, the Council highlighted Nigeria’s descent into a failed state, emphasizing that ethnic cleansing by Fulani herdsmen necessitates attention from lawmakers of Igbo extraction at both state and federal levels.
Comrade Igboayaka implored Igbo lawmakers to rechannel their efforts from lawmaking to empowering community youth groups with vital security equipment for self-protection against the incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen, bandits, and terrorists in the zone.
Clearly, only living individuals can reap the benefits of laws designed to serve the people’s interest. Ndigbo’s primary objective at present must be self-preservation, considering Nigeria’s regression into a state of brutality and ethnic cleansing.
Comrade Igboayaka remarked that the ongoing killings in Southeast states may have been prevented if state and national assembly members had recognized the importance of arming community youth organizations with guns and other security equipment to secure themselves through well-organized vigilante networks.
In light of the escalating violence, community youth leaders in various local governments must promptly summon their State House of Assembly members, Federal House of Representatives members, and Senators. The objective is to initiate a constituents’ empowerment program that would provide community youth organizations with essential security resources and gadgets to protect their farmlands and communities from Fulani herdsmen, bandits, and terrorists.
Comrade Igboayaka instructed community youth leaders to take action against legislators who disregard this appeal, ensuring they face the consequences of youth dissatisfaction.
Comrade Igboayaka pointed out that the key to addressing insecurity in the Southeast is a locally initiated, people-centric security platform that remains uninfluenced by political considerations, especially those of Southeast Governors. In view of the fact that security is a local matter, it requires a local solution; the repeated launch of military operations like Python Dance and Udoka by the federal government in the Southeast has failed to significantly mitigate insecurity. Consequently, local communities must be engaged to address insecurity effectively and supplement the efforts of security personnel.
It is apparent that Ndigbo, notably Igbo youths, have lost trust and confidence in Southeast Governors’ capacity to ensure the safety of lives and properties, resulting in the abject failure of all security outfits established by Southeast Governors to combat insecurity.
“Community stakeholders, youth leaders, and the president general should oversee the development of security architectures at the community level, uninfluenced by political interests of serving governors or politicians.”
There’s no constituency project more crucial to Ndigbo in this flawed entity called Nigeria than the protection of lives and properties. We urge all Southeast legislators, both state and federal, to redirect their planned December 2025 empowerment program to provide guns and other security gadgets, Comrade Igboayaka concluded.
