In a dramatic turn of events at the Benue State House of Assembly, former Speaker Aondona Dajoh has been suspended for three months following allegations of orchestrating an impeachment move against Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The suspension was announced during an emergency sitting held on Sunday, shortly after Dajoh tendered his resignation from the speakership. The Assembly swiftly elected Alfred Berger as the new Speaker in the same session, marking a rapid leadership transition amid rising political tensions.
According to sources within the Assembly, the decision to suspend Dajoh was reached after deliberations on his alleged role in mobilizing support for an impeachment process targeting Governor Alia. Lawmakers described the move as “a breach of legislative ethics and a threat to the stability of the state.”
In a further shake-up, the House under Berger’s leadership reversed two key decisions made by the former Speaker. Commissioner nominees previously rejected under Dajoh’s tenure were reconsidered and confirmed during the emergency sitting, signaling a shift in legislative priorities and alignment with the executive arm.
Political observers say the developments reflect deepening divisions within the Assembly and could reshape the balance of power in Benue State politics. While Dajoh has yet to publicly respond to the suspension, allies close to the former Speaker have described the move as “politically motivated.”
The Assembly has called for calm and pledged to uphold democratic principles in its proceedings. Speaker Berger, in his inaugural address, emphasized unity and collaboration with the executive to advance the interests of Benue citizens.
