Anambra NUJ Chairman Mourns Journalist Chuma-Odili, Condoles Family

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden de@th of veteran journalist and media consultant, Comrade Dr. Harris Udokama Chuma-Odili (Ogene Ogbunike), who passed away over the weekend after slumping at a public function on Friday, August 23, 2025.

Speaking in an interview with this reporter, Izunna Okafor, on Sunday, Dr. Odogwu described the late Chuma-Odili as a bold voice in the media, a cultural custodian, and a relentless advocate for truth and justice, whose de@th is a monumental loss not only to Ogbunike but to the journalism profession and Anambra State at large.

He recalled Chuma-Odili’s immense contributions to media advocacy, cultural revival, and community development, noting that his passing has created a vacuum that will be very difficult to fill.

“Comrade Chuma-Odili was not just a journalist; he was a movement on his own. Through his words and actions, he inspired many young journalists to embrace integrity, courage, and fearlessness in the discharge of their duties. He was passionate about Igbo culture, fearless in his activism, and selfless in community service. His de#th is indeed heartbreaking,” Dr. Odogwu stated.

The NUJ Chairman also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, describing him as a devoted father, brother, and illustrious son whose memory will remain evergreen. He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and urged the family to take solace in the indelible legacies he left behind.

He further assured that the NUJ, Anambra State Council, stands in solidarity with the family at this difficult time and will continue to honour the late Comrade’s contributions to the profession and the society.

“We have lost a strong voice, a mentor, and a brother. But even in de@th, Ogene Ogbunike remains a shining symbol of resilience, truth, and cultural pride,” he concluded.
