The Kaduna State Police Command has officially barred a scheduled rally organized by supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, due to security concerns. The event, planned to coincide with Obi’s birthday celebration, was reportedly set to include processions and gatherings across key areas of the state.
In a press release issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, authorities disclosed that intelligence reports suggested possible infiltration by criminal elements who might hijack the rally to incite violence and disrupt public peace. As a preventive measure, the Command emphasized that all political gatherings remain suspended until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally begins the next round of political activities.
The Police cited that the rally’s planned date coincides with INEC-sanctioned party primaries for the upcoming bye elections. Multiple political parties have already notified the Police of their scheduled activities, which include critical electoral processes across designated areas in Kaduna.
“The proposed rally is expected to overlap with and disrupt several areas designated for the conduct of other political parties’ primaries, thereby posing a significant risk of tension, clashes, and breakdown of law.”
Organizers were advised to suspend the rally in the interest of public safety, with the Command warning that legal action would be taken against any group or individual violating the directive. While the Command reiterated respect for citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and political expression, it stressed that maintaining law and order in the state remains its top priority.
The statement concludes with a reassurance:
“The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any individual or group found violating this directive.”
Peter Obi, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape and a former Anambra State Governor, continues to enjoy strong support among youth and reform-minded voters across the country. His birthday has often served as a rallying point for grassroots mobilization and civic engagement.
