In a major political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has formally invited former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to return to the party and seek its presidential ticket.
Prof. Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP and one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday. According to Gana, the move reflects the party’s strategy to unite credible leaders and reposition PDP as a formidable contender for the nation’s highest office.
“We have reached out to Peter Obi to return home for our party ticket,” Prof. Gana declared, adding that Obi’s track record, integrity, and widespread popularity make him an indispensable figure in Nigeria’s political future.
The announcement has stirred speculation about potential realignments among opposition parties, especially following the outcome of the 2023 elections. PDP insiders suggest that bringing Obi back could galvanize youth support and mend fractured alliances within the opposition camp.
However, Peter Obi, who defected from the PDP in 2022 to pursue his presidential ambition under the Labour Party, gained significant traction among young voters and civil society activists. His performance in 2023 earned admiration even beyond party lines, positioning him as a symbol of reform and credibility.
Political analysts view the PDP’s outreach as a strategic move to consolidate votes and rebrand ahead of 2027. While Obi has not yet responded publicly to the invitation, sources close to him say consultations are ongoing.
With elections still over a year away, the PDP is expected to intensify its reconciliation efforts and conduct an inclusive primary process. Party chieftains remain optimistic that Obi’s return could rejuvenate the party’s prospects and shift the national conversation.
