Tensions are mounting within the Kaura Students Directorate as a growing number of youth leaders voice strong concerns over what they term as neglect and exclusion by Comrade Hamza Maikudi, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs. The Directorate, composed of prominent youth activists and student representatives who played a pivotal role in the 2019 victory of Governor Bala Mohammed, is now calling for a government-led inquiry into Maikudi’s conduct and stewardship.
The Directorate was formed from a coalition of student youth groups that coalesced under the 2017 Kaura Campaign Council to rally support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Despite facing intimidation and political suppression under the prior APC-led administration, they stood firm. In 2019, their efforts contributed significantly to the successful election of Governor Bala Mohammed.
Governor Bala, widely praised for his youth-inclusive policies including the disbursement of scholarships and appointments of young leaders earned the Directorate’s continued admiration. Members applauded His Excellency’s recent appointment of a Special Assistant on Scholarship Comr Salim Adamu Dandada, describing it as “a welcome development that reflects his unwavering commitment to youth advancement.”
However, the Directorate’s once-solid alliance is now splintering due to alleged failings of Comr. Hamza Maikudi. According to several members, Maikudi has strayed from his mandate by: Excluding key youth stakeholders from decision-making structures. Neglecting campaign allies who championed his appointment. Failing to implement directives focused on equitable youth representation
“We feel betrayed,” said one member who requested anonymity for personal reasons. “We backed Maikudi with genuine hope. But since assuming office, he has turned his back on the people who built the platform he now enjoys.”
Directorate members contend that Maikudi’s leadership runs counter to Governor Bala’s vision of inclusive and accountable governance. They argue that this alienation of youth voices violates internal commitments made during the campaign and diminishes the role of young leaders in the present administration.
In a formal appeal, the Directorate urged the Office of the Governor to review the stewardship of Comr. Hamza Maikudi. Their demands center on: Reinforcing student representation in policy matters. Ensuring that appointees uphold collective values.Promoting fair and transparent engagement with youth groups
The students warn that unresolved tensions could impact youth mobilization efforts ahead of the 2027 election cycle. As seasoned campaigners, they highlight the importance of trust, loyalty, and collaboration as essential elements for any political success.
Despite their grievances, the Directorate reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Bala Mohammed. Their message was clear: “Our allegiance remains, but accountability must be upheld to preserve the legacy we helped to build.”
As the Directorate waits for a formal response, they continue to engage student communities across Bauchi, rallying for justice, inclusion, and reform. Their call resonates beyond politics it’s a challenge to leaders to remember the commitments made to youth young people, and a reminder that leadership must reflect the voices of those who helped shape its foundation. We can’t continue to blamed the old but we can’t act right.
The coming weeks could prove pivotal in redefining student-government relations in Bauchi State. All eyes are now on the relevant stakeholders for a decisive resolution to this growing crisis of representation.
