The Bauchi State Government, through its Ministry of Natural Resources Development, has launched a transformative initiative aimed at formalizing the activities of informal miners across the state. In collaboration with Bladira Global Consulting Firm Ltd., the ministry hosted a one-day training ceremony that marked the first step towards integrating these miners into a structured and legally recognized framework.
The training emphasized the importance of accurate data collection to build a comprehensive database of informal mining activities. This data will serve as a foundation for improved revenue generation through taxes and royalties, while also enabling better regulation of mining operations.
Hon. Commissioner Muhammad Mai Wada Bello, addressing participants at the event, underscored the vital need for collaboration with traditional rulers, security agencies, and youth training institutions. “This effort is not just about formalizing mining,” he stated, “but about creating a system that values safety, respects environmental standards, and contributes meaningfully to our economic development.”
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Muhammad Maijamaa Dewu, also highlighted the state’s ongoing partnerships in the mining sector, pointing to a collaborative venture with Chinese firm Shandong Minsheng Group as an example of Bauchi’s commitment to mineral resource development.
However, the formalization will enhance Data Acquisition: Precise documentation of informal miners for regulation and planning.
Legal Formalization: Bringing miners under legal oversight to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Revenue Generation: Enhancing state earnings via royalties and taxes.
Environmental Sustainability: Promoting eco-friendly mining practices to prevent land degradation.
Safety Standards: Introducing mandatory protocols to reduce hazards and safeguard lives.
This milestone underscores Bauchi State’s broader vision of harnessing its natural resources responsibly, while aligning with national goals for sustainable economic advancement.
