A disturbing incident unfolded on Monday during a Town Hall meeting held at the Auchi Council Hall, reportedly organized by Comrade Chief Okhani JP, a well-known activist and community voice for the people of Afema and Edo North. The event was set to provide legislators with an opportunity to engage the community and present their stewardship.
According to eyewitness reports and emerging video footage, just moments after the program commenced, a group identified as the Edo Security Network, allegedly under the directive of Governor Monday Okpebhole’s administration, stormed the venue with force. Gunshots were reportedly fired into the air, causing panic and resulting in the abrupt dispersal of attendees.
What followed has sparked widespread condemnation: Chief Okhani was allegedly targeted and beaten severely by members of the security team for filming the presence of a political figure at the scene. Sources close to the activist confirm that he is now receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital due to the injuries sustained.
The incident has ignited a wave of public concern across Edo State and beyond. Human rights advocates, civil society organizations, and members of the public are demanding accountability and transparency.
“This kind of intimidation is unacceptable in a democracy,” said a local resident who attended the meeting. “Comrade Okhani has always stood for the people, and silencing him like this is a blow to free speech.”
However, several calls have been made for an urgent investigation into the actions of the Edo Security Network, with some demanding the immediate intervention of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the National Human Rights Commission.
Meanwhile, social media continues to buzz with the hashtag #JusticeForOkhani, as citizens rally behind the activist and demand justice.
Chief Okhani JP’s legal and support team have yet to release a public statement. This is a developing story.
