Imo Schools Shut Down, Tension Escalate Over Diphtheria Disease Outbreak – In Emeka Ihedioha’s Community

Governor Hope Uzodinma has ordered the closure of all primary and secondary schools in Mbutu community and envrions within Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area due to an outbreak of diphtheria in the area.

The Governor , through his Commissioner for Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. B.T.O. Ikegwuoha, made this known in a statement issued in Owerri.

The government stated that measure is necessary to prevent the spread of the disease.

“This is to inform you that there has been a reported outbreak of diphtheria in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area and possibly other parts of Imo State,”

“As a precautionary measure, we urge you to take immediate action to ensure the health and safety of your children.” the statement read.

The Commissioner confirmed that all schools in and around Mbutu communities had been directed to shut down effective Monday, May 26, 2025, following the alert on the outbreak.

Parents and guardians were urged to watch for symptoms of diphtheria, including sore throat, fever, swollen glands, a membrane covering the tonsils, and difficulty in breathing.

“If your child complains of any sickness, please take them to the hospital immediately,” the statement emphasized.

The Commissioner also highlighted the importance of vaccination and good hygiene in curbing the spread of the disease.

Parents were encouraged to ensure their children are up to date with routine vaccinations, particularly the diphtheria vaccine.

The Commissioner called for collaboration among stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, guardians, and community leaders, to work with healthcare professionals in combating the outbreak.

“Let us prioritize the health and well-being of our children,” it added.

In a bid to create awareness, the Commissioner urged residents to seek medical attention promptly if they notice unusual symptoms and advised communities to avoid close contact with infected individuals.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education assured the public that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health and local health departments to address the situation.

“By taking prompt action and working together, we can prevent the spread of diphtheria and keep our children safe,”.
